COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Witnesses say it was a week long fight over a dog and a fear for his life that caused Jayaray Wilson to pull the trigger.

27 year old Wilson is the suspect in Columbus's first murder of the year.  On New Year's Day Columbus Police responded to a call at the Park Crest Mobile Home Park off of Old Cusseta Road. When police arrived they found 21 year old Desmond Gunn suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Wilson pled not guilty to murder in Recorder's Court Thursday.

Two witnesses gave their testimony in court.  One was Wilson's girlfriend, the other, a frequent visitor to the park.

Police have confirmed a week prior to the fatal shooting on New Year's Day, the victim, Desmond Gunn shot at Wilson.

"Fortunately that attack was made at a trailer park where a number of people were outside and saw it," says Wilson's lawyer, Mike Garner.

Police have several statements concerning the case.  Garner believes this will keep the trial from becoming a murder case, "there is no question that Mr. Wilson was not armed on the first occasion.  Mr. Gunn, the deceased, was the only one who has a firearm and he shot at Wilson."

It's believed the second time the two men met at the park Wilson feared for his life and shot Gunn.

Wilson turned himself in to Columbus Police on Monday.

Garner says, "All of the testimony indicates it was self defense. I seriously doubt this would end up as a murder trial."

The case was bound over to Superior Court and Wilson is being held without bond.
