COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Hundreds gather to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Monday morning at the Columbus Trade Center. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Iota Lambda Chapter, held its 24th Annual MLK Unity Award Breakfast.

The organization's general president, Herman "Skip" Mason of Atlanta delivered the keynote address.  Mason, a personal friend of the King family, says there is still work to be done to mend race relations in America.

"We must learn to live together, work together, play together, pray together and take care of each other. This is not a perfect world. We still have a lot of things to fix," says Mason.

Each year the fraternity recognizes a person in the community who has upheld the ideals of Dr. King. This year's recipient is former Columbus Mayor, Bob Poydasheff.

Mitzi Oxford from the American Red Cross also encouraged participants to donate to the cause in Haiti. A box was passed from table to table to receive donations.

Mason told the crowd that the tragedy in Haiti is personal for him. His mother-in-law is in Haiti, but says she's is doing fine.
