Sumter County, GA (WTVM) - Sheriff Pete Smith and his deputies have been dealing with dead zones in their radio system for over five years.
Smith says the communication problems facing the Sumter County Sheriff Department leaves lives in danger longer than necessary.
The Sheriff's department has tried out several digital systems already in 2010 and is still working to find the best solution to their problem.
In November the county commission was ready to vote on a new analog system, but then the digital option came into play.
The department is testing the digital radio antenna on top of Sumter County EMC's 300 foot tower. Deputies have tested radio signal in known dead zones and will use that information to get commissioners on board.
The sheriff hopes the commission will vote on a new system in the next few months.
