Auburn Police Investigate Drowning

AUBURN, AL (WXTX) - Auburn police say a 30-year-old woman accidentally drowned Monday night at a pond near the intersection of College Street and East University.

Auburn Police say around 11:00 Monday night, the woman and her father pulled up and parked at the Winn Dixie on College Street to get some groceries. Chief Tommy Dawson says Billy Foster exited the vehicle and ran away.

"We do feel like we know why she got out of the car but out of respect for her family we don't want to get into that," explained Chief Dawson.

Dawson will only say Foster crossed the busy intersection at College and East University, climbed a barbed wire fence and made her way into this open field near Auburn's Research Park. Police believe Foster did not see the pond she was running towards because it was dark.

"The father called us for assistance, we went out and did a search and began looking for her and our officer found her in the ponds she had fallen into we pulled her from the pond and began CPR but unfortunately our efforts to revive her were not successful," he said.

An autopsy is being performed, even though police say foul play is not suspected.
