Savannah State Signs 13 In-State Recruits

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State University interim football coach Julius Dixon announces the signing of 13 players to National letters of Intent to play football for the Orange and Blue.

Dixon and his assistants focused on  in-state recruits this year. "Until we get the program up and running we have to sign kids from the state of Georgia. We tried to concentrate our efforts to make the dollar go as far as it can. In getting in-state players, there is more opportunity for family and friends to come see them play."

The 42-year-old interim coach is pleased with his first signing class. "I am very pleased with these young men. Not only what they bring athletically but academically. We made it a point to get kids who have been academically sound," said Dixon.

Dixon feels all of the recruits bring a lot to the table for SSU. 'I consider all 13 of these kids jewels. They picked Savannah State because they thought SSU gave them the best opportunity."

Of the 13, three are from the coastal empire. Running back Sheldon Barnes and linebacker Darvean Herron of Hinesville, GA will remain Tigers but will trade in their Bradwell Institute blue & gold for SSU's orange and blue.  Also inking with the Tigers was Brunswick, GA wide receiver Josh Coleman. "I'm excited about signing the local guys. They are good kids. They are athletic and fit our needs," said Dixon.

Dixon went back to his hometown of Toccoa, GA to sign defensive back/wide receiver Quan Trammell. "Quan is a tremendous kid. He will help us do a lot of things. He adds that element of the game of size, quickness and soft hands," stated Dixon.

Savannah State signed four wide receivers, three 2-way players, two linebackers, one quarterback, one running back, one offensive lineman and one tight end. Dixon hopes to add more linemen in the near future.
