Columbus Looks to Revise Truck Routes

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  Damaged pavement, cutting curbs, and speeding.

Those are some complaints city officials say they have received from Columbus residents about trucks traveling through their neighborhoods.

"In an effort for them to get from point A to point B, they're using short cuts and sometimes they increase their speed and it causes concern for neighbors. It's scary when you have something that large come by you at that rate of speed," said Gary Allen, City Councilor for District 6.

So the city formed a committee made up of citizens and local business owners to remedy the problem. The group looked at roadways across the city and revised the current ordinance for truck routes, proposing trucks stay on the main arteries in the city as they make their pick ups and deliveries and stay off residential streets.

"It uses weights and lengths of vehicles to regulate that. It'll be enforced by Public Safety Departments- police and sheriff. We'll go ahead and put signs out once the ordinance is passed saying this is a truck route and what the limit is," said Ron Hamlett, the city's Traffic Engineer.

City officials say the goal of the newly improved truck route system is to meet the concerns of citizens and the needs of businesses.

"All we're trying to do is say use the heavy duty streets to get there and not just go cross country through subdivisions. We're trying to eliminate a lot of the cut-through traffic," Hamlett said.

The mayor and council members will vote on the ordinance in two weeks.
