Settlement reached in black farmers' discrimination lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – An historic settlement was reached Thursday in the longstanding litigation against the USDA by black farmers.

The agreement will provide $1.25 billion dollars to African American farmers who alleged they suffered racial discrimination in USDA farm loan programs.

Thousands of black farmers - mostly from the south - claimed local USDA offices routinely denied them loans and disaster aid that routinely went to whites.

If approved by Congress, it would be the second round of damages stemming from a class action lawsuit originally settled in 1999.
