Neighbors still worry over daycare fire

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Children's backpacks and little coats are all that remain from what used to be a home day care.

Flames gutted the Mill Branch Road location as children nearby watched and cried for help.  A day later, neighbors are still trying to figure out what happened.

Nine children were inside the daycare when the fire started.

Five made it out safely;  the other four were taken to a hospital. One year old Michael Duvard, Jr. died from his injuries Saturday afternoon.

Eva Aikin, neighbor to the daycare, was stuck at the police barricade when she overheard children were being rescued.

She immediately opened her doors for the children.

Childcare providers say this tragedy is something every daycare is trained to prevent. They are state mandated to undergo numerous training courses, drills and exercises.

No matter how rare this may be, neighbors pray Friday was the last fire they ever see.
