COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - With Georgia slashing prison medical costs, state officials are suggesting early releases for ailing and elderly inmates.
Records from The Georgia Department of Corrections records show medical releases is on the rise. In 2007, there were 22 medical dismissals but by the fiscal year of 2009 that number more than tripled to 69.
Officials claim the releases are given only to the most ill patients who are no longer a threat to society. When asked for examples, corrections officials said they could not release specifics due to health privacy laws.
