23rd Annual Walk Classic event

Press Release

COLUMBUS, GA – Open Door Community House, Inc. invites the community to come enjoy a day of family fun at the 23rd Annual Walk Classic on Saturday, March 13, at Open Door Community House, located at 2405 Second Avenue, Columbus.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.  Come walk, run, or ride your bike on a 4.2 mile course through uptown Columbus and along the Riverwalks in Columbus and Phenix City.  The route will return you to Open Door for music, door prizes, and great food provided by the Heavens' Saints Motorcycle Ministry!

Don't forget your faithful pet!  This year, there will be a special contest for our canine friends who are walking.  The 1st Annual P.A.W. Contest (Precious, Adorable, and Well-Behaved) winners will receive a Petsmart gift card.  There will be two categories for judging:  dogs under 50 pounds, and 51 pounds and above.

"We have set lofty goals for this year.  To meet them, we really need your help! Last year, because our community and local churches were so generous, nearly $42,000 was raised. So this year, our 75 anniversary of providing ministry to the Columbus community, we are aiming to raise $45,000 and have 400 walkers. All money raised helps to fund the vital ministries Open Door provides to our community – to those who live in poverty or who are homeless," remarks Rev. Kim Jenkins, Executive Director of Open Door Community House.  "This is a fun day in a family-friendly atmosphere.  Each year the event gets bigger and better.  Come join us!"

The mission of Open Door is to meet basic needs and to empower low-income persons of our area to realize their full potential as children of God through ministries for children and youth in an after school program, a parenting education program, a transition home for women in crisis, a senior adult ministry, case management for homeless women, a clothing bank, a chaplaincy program, a showering program for the unsheltered homeless, and the Open Door Institute, a culinary and life skills training program for homeless and low-income persons.
