Accident Claims Life of Out of Town Spring Breaker

Auburn, AL (WXTX)--A one vehicle accident around 2:25 am Monday morning claimed the life of 19-year-old Garrett Schlichtemeier, of Ogallala, Nebraska.

The accident happened on Shug Jordan Parkway in Auburn near the Wire Road intersection. Schlichtemeier, along with two other occupants, were ejected from the vehicle after it overturned several times.  The other occupants were the driver, 18 year old Michael Madkins, of Elk Grove, California and 18 year old Tyler Perri, of Covina, California.

Perri did not seek medical treatment, but Schlichtemeier and Madkins were transported to East Alabama medical with critical injuries. Both were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Schlichtemeier was pronounced brain dead at 10:25 AM Monday morning from a severe closed head injury. Madkins remains hospitalized.

It appears that the Range Rover Discovery the three were traveling in was headed east on Shug Jordan Parkway when Madkins apparently lost control causing the vehicle to overturn several times, ejecting the occupants. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the accident. Schlichtemeier's body will be taken to the medical examiners office of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination.

All three of the accident victims were student athletes at Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska. It is believed they were on their way to a spring break gathering in Spanish Fort and had stopped in Auburn to visit with a friend before proceeding on with their trip. The case remains under investigation by the Auburn Police, Lee County Coroner's office, and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences.
