COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A free service that prepares your taxes and keeps none of your return is now available in Columbus.  VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. 

It's a volunteer based program that provides FREE tax preparation to households earning $51,000 or less. All volunteers are trained and certified through the Internal Revenue Service.

For more information, call (706) 324-4366, or visit www.vitainthevalley.com.  You can also use the website to learn about federal tax credits that can reduce that amount of taxes that you owe.

Proper Documentation is REQUIRED for VITA volunteers to adequately and accurately prepare your tax return.  

Please bring the following items with you:
  • Social Security Cards for you, spouse and all dependents
  • Valid Picture ID: Driver's license, Military ID, Identification Card etc.
  • Copy of your 2011 tax return, if you have it
  • Income documentation including:
  • W-2 forms for all jobs worked in 2012
  • All 1099 forms showing other income received in 2012
  • Your account number and routing number to have your refund deposited directly into your account. You can split your refund into as many as 3 different accounts.
