CUSSETA, GA (WTVM) -  Officials took the stand in the Chattahoochee County Courthouse Tuesday in the first day of testimony in the case of Quentin Sawyer.

The 18-year-old is facing murder charges after authorities say he shot 19-year-old Demarcus Lukes in the head inside of a car back in January of 2009.

A state medical examiner testified that Lukes was shot at close range and GBI agents who processed the scene say blood on Sawyer's clothes put him close to the crime.

But no prints were found on the gun, according to testimony.

Sawyer says the shooting was an accident and that the gun went off as Lukes was handing it to him.

He tells GBI agents he did not know it was loaded and thought the safety was on.

The trial continues in Cusseta Wednesday.
