LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) –  The Lee County Sheriff's Office has arrested 6 people -- five of them were serving time inside an inmate detention center.

Authorities were alerted to illegal activity inside the Lee County Detention Center when an inmate swallowed pills in an attempt to conceal the drugs.

She was admitted to the East Alabama Medical Center, then treated and released the following day.

Investigators made the following arrests on March 13th.

1. Carie Everitt (22) Covington, AL - One count distribution of controlled substance, one count of promoting prison contraband

2. David Verville (51) Salem, AL -  One count distribution of controlled substance, one count of promoting prison contraband

3. Stacy Burgess (21) Smiths Station, AL - One count of promoting prison contraband

4. Venyetta Giles (24) Opelika, AL - One count of promoting prison contraband

5. Rosa Holloway (22) Seale, AL - One count of promoting prison contraband

6. Shannon Waldrep (37) Seale, AL - One count of promoting prison contraband

Sheriffs say Verville was the only non-incarcerated individual in the group.  They believe he was the source of the drugs that were brought into the detention center. Everitt, one of the inmates arrested, is currently serving a 15-week sentence for third degree forgery.

Some of the drugs smuggled included Zanax, Valium, Percocet, and marijuana.

We're told distribution of a controlled substance is a class B felony—punishable by a sentence of 2 to 20 years. Promoting prison contraband is a class C felony punishable by a sentence of 1 to 10 years.
