Columbus Man Gets Maximum 65 Years For Shooting

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  A Columbus man has been convicted for shooting a woman in the face. Police say the incident was nearly fatal.

The jury deliberated a little more than an hour Friday and found 53-year-old Boyzie Barnes guilty on all of his charges.

All along, Barnes said the April 2009 shooting was a freak accident and that the gun went off when he and the victim, 41-year-old Lisa Johnson, were arguing- the bullet hitting her in the lower part of her face.

But experts testified that the shooter was at the foot of Johnson's bed inside her South Columbus apartment and that two bullets were fired from the gun.

Lisa Johnson also testified identifying Barnes as the shooter the wheelchair she is now confined to.

When it came to Barnes' sentencing, Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Frank Jordan considered his previous murder and armed robbery conviction back in 1986 in Dougherty County, Georgia.

The state recommended Barnes never see the light of day.

He was sentenced to the maximum of 65 years in prison.
