Auburn Police Arrest 10 in Forgery Scheme

Press Release

AUBURN, AL - On Thursday, March 18, 2010 at approximately 12:58 p.m. the Auburn Police Division responded to a bank located in the 2100 block of East University Drive in reference to a person attempting to cash a forged check.

A short time later, at 1:36 p.m., while investigating this  complaint, the Auburn Police Division received a second forgery in-progress call from a bank located in the 1400 block of Opelika Road.  Officers immediately responded to that location as well.

Police conducted traffic stops on a total of four out-of-state vehicles in connection to the two incidents and took 12 suspects into custody.

The Auburn Police Division has received a number of similar complaints recently and investigators believe these incidents are part to an organized operation out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Using intelligence gathered, Auburn police, with the assistance of the Opelika Police Department, met with local bank officials and developed a plan to combat the problem.  It was this new plan that was used to apprehend these suspects.

Ten of the 12 suspects were arrested and charged:

Arthur Porter, Jr., age 45, of Atlanta
Detavis E. Seats, age 19, of Atlanta
Darren Whitfield, age 42, of Riverdale, Georgia
Ricardo A. Woodfin, age 22, of Stone Mountain, Georgia
Deonte Carr, age 22, of Atlanta
Santana Chivers, age 22, of Ellenwood, Georgia
Robert Cotton, age 47, of Smyrna, Georgia
Jarvis Bethune, age 18, of Atlanta
Juarez Claytor, age 55, of Atlanta
Robert Haggins, age 24, of Atlanta

All have been charged with one count of Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree except for Woodfin who is charged with four counts.

The offense, a Class C felony, is punishable by a fine of up to $15,000 and one to 10 years in prison.  The ten arrestees were transported to the Lee County Detention Center to await bond.  The other two suspects were questioned and released.
