COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - The place to deliver babies in Columbus is expanding. Right now the Columbus Medical Center is the only hospital expectant mothers can deliver their bundles of joy but that's about to change. Hospital CEO, Robert Granger made the announcement this afternoon.
St Francis received word last night that they have been cleared to pursue obstetrics and gynecology. The state of Georgia has determined the hospital can meet best quality standards.
Now it's just a matter of determining how pre-natal services will be incorporated into the hospital. Officials say they're excited that pregnant mothers will now have options in choosing where to deliver their babies.
"The opportunity to have more than one hospital for their patients to choose to deliver was critical and vital and they were not happy with the service that were available at the other hospitals," says Granger.
Susan Epley from OBGYN Associates says,"I think most women who are in women's healthcare truly want not only good care for women but outstanding care and our group of regional associates really believes that St. Francis is going to create the ultimate and best care for women."
Hospital officials find out next week where they will house this new pre-natal facility. They are hoping to build the 8.25 million dollar project on the St. Francis campus.
