Hometown Flavor -- Ed's Country Cooking and Barbecue

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  If you stop by Ed's Country Cooking and Barbecue in Phenix City, don't be surprised to see a line stretching out the door, especially at lunch-time.  But, you'll be sitting down in front of some good country cooking before you know it.  Rodney Mitchell is a minister at Auburn Heights Baptist Church in Phenix City.  On his plate today?

"I had the grilled chicken, baked beans, and potato salad," he says.

Joey Thomas drove in from Seale for the country cooking.  He has more than one favorite on the menu.

"Macaroni and cheese, and especially the dressing.  Every time I come, even if it comes with rice, I get the dressing anyway.  "It's always that good," he adds.

The menu reads like a holiday at grandmas -- chicken, barbecue, beef tips, yams, fresh greens, and more -- and that's just on Tuesdays.  You'll find different specials each day.  Thomas says the food is unique. 

"You don't get ‘em like that anywhere else.  I think it's home cooking -- what I call home cooking," he says.

And while you're here, you'll also feel very much at home.  Linda Milligan not only loves the food, but also the way the staff makes her feel when she walks in. 

"They are so friendly to us, they recognize us when we come in the door, and when Chick's on the grill, the grilled chicken is fantastic!" she adds.

One big reason the service is great is because of the family atmosphere.  Ed – the restaurants namesake – is a second generation cook, and he always pays special attention to his customers, whether it's holding a door or chatting it up while folks enjoy their meal.  Mitchell says Ed's not only involved in the restaurant, but also in the community. 

"It's great food, and Ed's just a great person.  He helps us with our men's ministry at our church, and he's just a great guy.  Those who help you, you wanna help them, and he's just a great guy for the community."

However, it's Ed's son, Brandon, that he hopes will carry the torch in the years to come.

"We specialize in barbecue and country cooking, but we can pretty much do anything.  You name it, we got it!" Brandon adds.

One thing's for sure… The Miles family has cooking in their blood – and know exactly what their customers want.  Milligan says that is what makes her a repeat customer. 

"All Ed's good recipes.  He's got a great team here.  We love it.  We probably come in once a week," she told us.

Thomas said he'll keep making his drive for the good food, as long as they'll have him!

"I hope it keeps going good, because I don't want to see it go anywhere.  We come all the way from Seale to eat," he says.
