AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -  Thursday afternoon marked the start of the construction process for Knology cable company  in the auburn area.

Knology offers cable, Internet and phone services to residents and businesses.

Royce Ard, the General Manager of Knology, says there are many benefits to having cable companies to choose from; prices usually drop and customer service usually rises.

The strongest advantage to this move is what will happen to auburn's unemployment numbers.

Knology is scouting for a location and laying out a plan to hire many employees. Ard says, "we will hire customer service people here, we'll hire technicians and rent or buy a building so there is an economic development feature as well."

Auburn Mayor Bill Ham says he is excited about Knology coming to auburn because residents can now choose who they want to be their cable provider, "we talked day in and day out about quality of life and things making a difference about people wanting to live in auburn versus the other choices they have."

There are some areas in auburn that do not get cable at all, they must order satellite dish programs to view television, officials hope this too will change with the move. Mayor Ham says, I would hope at the end of the day, that all of our citizens will be able to enjoy top quality cable, television and Internet and telephone service."

After the engineering study is finished, officials hope to begin construction by early summer.
