COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office is getting online, launching two new web sites that are available to the public.
The first is Inmate Search.
It allows anyone to enter a name and see if that person is a current inmate at the jail along with their charge, bond, court appearances and release date.
"This the way that law enforcement, the direction it should be going in. It's very progressive. When people have their relatives or family members incarcerated it becomes a very anxious time for them. Now they're going to have a resource to answer any questions they might be having," Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr said.
"At least 50% or better of our calls are people, the public, inquiring if someone is in jail, what their bond amount is, what their release date is. We like to focus on security so we're hoping this frees up some of our resources so we can focus more on security," added Jail Commander Dane Collins.
As for the other site, Warrant Search, the Sheriff hopes it will help in the local fight against crime.
"You're going to be able to type in somebody's name and find out if they have an active warrant and that might lead to a call coming in to our agency or to the police department which might lead to more arrests. That's what we're here for. It's going to be a very helpful tool," he said.
Officials tell WTVM the list of inmates being booked in and out of the Muscogee County Jail will also be posted online in the upcoming months.
