PAWS Humane will host "Blackout Weekend"

COLUMBUS, GA - This Friday and Saturday, April 9th and 10th, PAWS Humane will be hosting "Black Out Weekend."

During these two days we will be adopting out any black or mostly black dog for $100 and any black or mostly black adult cat for $50.

This is because, unfortunately, those animals tend to stay here longer than other shelter pets.

Take Jan for instance. Jan is a mostly black three-year-old American Blue Heeler/ Labrador mix who was one of over 400 animals seized from a shelter that was meant to house only sixty in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

The conditions in this shelter were so horrendous that is was raided by the ASPCA and other rescue groups. Jan and some others made it here to PAWS Humane safely, and she has been waiting patiently for a home to call her own since January.

We also have Johnny, a very sweet four-year-old longhaired black and white "tuxedo" colored cat. Johnny was rescued from Animal Control when his time ran out in February and was recently sent to our PetCo adoption center.

We know Johnny would make a good companion for someone, but he is overlooked because of a color pattern he cannot help.

PAWS Humane hopes that during these two days we will be able to find homes for these animals. As with all of our pets, they are spayed or neutered, dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated, and disease tested.

We are not totally sure of how the "Black Dog Syndrome" came to be, nor do we know why these animals stay in shelters for so long.

It may have something to do with the old superstition of black animals being unlucky, it could have something to do with their coats not having any features that stand out – some people think black animals are not "unique".

Whatever the case may be, black dogs and cats have just as much personality and can bring about just as much joy as their multicolored counterparts.

Next week Monday, April 12th through Friday, April 16th  PAWS Humane will also be offering a discount on "The Deal" program for your pets at home.

The Deal includes a heartworm test for dogs or a feline triple test for cats, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, rabies vaccine for animals over twelve weeks old, DA2PP vaccine for dogs or FVRCP vaccine for cats, deworming, and a nail trim.

Our Deal program is normally $150 but next week we are offering $25 off of the program, making it only $125. If you are looking for a reasonable price for these services, this is a definite bargain that you do not want to miss.

So come on out to PAWS Humane this weekend and adopt a new best friend or come and make an appointment to get in on "The Deal" next week!

PAWS is open from 10 AM until 6 PM Monday through Friday, 10 AM until 5 PM on Saturday, and we are closed on Sundays.

Feel free to give us a call at (706) 565.0035, or stop by the shelter at 4900 Milgen Road anytime during regular business hours to ask questions or set up your pet's appointment.

As always, we are People Helping Animals, Animals Helping People.
