COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Police in Gwinnett County say 8-year-old Andrae Brooks Jr. was playing a video game at the apartment of a family friend, when the men barged in and started shooting -- striking Andrae in the head.

The boy's father told police he had brought the boy to the Lilburn apartment Friday, to get a haircut.

Andrae was a second grade student at Dimon Elementary School, he was one of five sons.

His mother Shameka Johnson told News Leader 9, "He was very high-spirited, he loved to make jokes and was always laughing and playing and he was a sweet little boy. I want to find out who did this to my baby. I really do."

Andrae's father picked him up in Columbus, GA on Easter Sunday. The two planned to spend spring break together in the Atlanta area.

Johnson explained, "He said he was taking him to get his haircut at some apartment and somebody came in and kicked in the door and told everyone to get down and started shooting and shot my baby in the head. He was the only one who got hurt."

The young boy did not die instantly. He was taken to Children's Hospital in Atlanta where his mother sat by his side during his final moments. She cried, "I told him to open his eyes. I told him I loved him."

Gwinnett County Police officers say no arrests have been made. A resident of the apartment was arrested the day of the shooting on an "unrelated" drug charge, but they believe two men may have been responsible for the Friday night shooting.

"I just want to know why he would take an innocent child's life and what made him do something like that. I hope he has enough of a guilty conscience to turn himself in," Johnson begged.

Detectives are actively pursuing leads.

There is a $2,000 reward being offered to anyone who has more information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects in this case. You can call the Gwinnett County Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-8477.

Andrae's funeral will be at the Faith Tabernacle Community Church on Floyd Road in Columbus, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The family has set up a memorial fund for Andrae Brooks Jr. and you can donate money at any CB&T Bank.
