CORTA host Special Olympic tennis

Press Release:

COLUMBUS, GA- Columbus Regional Tennis Association, CORTA, will host the 2010 Special Olympic Tennis Area Games on Friday, April 23, 2010 at Cooper Creek Tennis Center.  Check in is from 8:30am - 9:00 am with the Opening Ceremony beginning at 9:00.  Games will begin at approximately 9:15.  The special athletes will be participating in Basic Skills in tennis as well as Unified Doubles.
This will be the second year that CORTA has hosted the games, last year being a huge success with 42 athletes participating involving 3 area high schools, CORTA's Ad In Special Pops class, and Parks and Recreation.  This year we are expecting over 60 athletes to participate in a fun filled and competitive day!
CORTA's Jr. Teen Council hosts a Christmas Toy Tournament in December and all proceeds are used to host the Special Olympic Area Games and to advance athletes to the State Special Olympic Games.  This year CORTA will sponsor 15 area special athletes in the state games on May 22, 2010 in Atlanta.  The CORTA Jr. Teen Council is a group of community service driven teens who use tennis as an avenue to reach out to the community through several outlets, such as special Olympics, schools programs, TennisWorks in the Parks, girl scouts, boy scouts, etc.  To date the group of 26 teens have accrued over 700 hours in community service since last August.
In 2007 CORTA began a new program called "Ad In for Special Populations" which is a clinic for all ages and exceptionalities.  A tennis professional along with many volunteers meets weekly training the special athletes in basic tennis skills and preparing them for the Special Olympic Games.
