DOT hosts open house Monday for Whittlesey Rd. widening

COLUMBUS, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation has scheduled a detour open house on Whittlesey Road Widening and Reconstruction Project for April 19, 2010 at the Northside Chapel located at 1901 Whittlesey Road in Columbus, Georgia.

The detour open house will be held between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. You are invited to attend at your convenience anytime during these hours.

The road widening and reconstruction consist of two projects STPOO-8060-00(002) and STPOO-0005-00(749) in Muscogee County.

Project STPOO-8060-00(002) would widen and reconstruct Whittlesey Road from Rollins Way to just past the intersection with Veterans Parkway (US 27/SR 1), for a distance of 1.09 miles.

The project would widen the existing 2-lane roadway with 11-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders to two-12 foot lanes in each direction, with one section of three-12 foot lanes in an easterly direction between W. Hamilton Park Drive and the eastern project terminus, with shoulders varying from 12 to 16 feet, including 5-foot sidewalks and curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway, and a 20-foot raised median.

Veterans Parkway will be widened from four lanes with a flush median to a six-lane urban (curb and gutter) section with a raised median.
 
Project STPOO-0005-00(749) would provide for the widening and reconstruction of Whittlesey Road from Bradley Park Road to Rollins Way for a distance of 0.25 miles.

The project would widen the existing 2-lane roadway to two- 12-foot lanes in each direction with 16-foot shoulders, including 5-foot sidewalks and curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway, and a 20-foot raised median.
 
Whittlesey Road Detour:Whittlesey Road will be closed between Ashwood Drive and Bradley Park Drive for approximately 45 days. Vehicles will use Bradley Park Drive to continue on Whittlesey Road.

Old Whittlesey Road Detour:
Old Whittlesey Road will be closed between Whittlesey Way and Veterans Parkway for approximately 1 day on the weekend. Vehicles will use Whittlesey Way to continue on Old Whittlesey Road.
 
The purpose of this detour open house is to provide the public with an opportunity to view the proposed detour, ask questions, and to provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the proposal.
