COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Talbot County man accused of strangling his friend to death must undergo a mental evaluation.  Judge John Allen ordered the assessment for Kirk Bonner, 44, during a docket call in Talbotton Thursday.

Bonner is charged with murder in connection with the strangulation death of 36-year-old Gloria Ann Bray in August of 2009.  Bray and Bonner were said to be friends.  Authorities say the motive may have revolved around an undisclosed amount of money that Bray had.

Bonner told the judge that he has been treated for a mental illness previously while living in another state.  Defense Attorney John Wilson says he's trying to obtain those records to submit before the court.

The case was continued until after a psychiatric evaluation can be completed.  In the meantime, Bonner is being held in the Talbot County Jail.
