3rd Annual Heroes for Red Cross

Press Release

COLUMBUS, GA: On Monday, April 19, Noon, at the Columbus Marriott, Empire Mills Room, the local Red Cross will host the kickoff of the 3rd Annual HEROES for Red Cross campaign. The fundraiser, typically held in July, has been moved up in hopes of raising money for the West Central GA Chapter, left struggling following the overwhelming support of the earthquake in Haiti. Almost $200,000 has been raised locally for Haitian relief but very few donations have come in to support everyday services including help for families who lose everything in a fire.

"Red Cross is a hero everyday for families in crisis and soldiers and their families at Ft. Benning," says 2010 HEROES Chairman Bob Poydasheff. "Supporting Red Cross Haiti relief has been the right thing to do but we must remember the heroic efforts of Red Cross volunteers every day right here at home," Poydasheff added.

HEROES for Red Cross is a 4 week fundraising campaign in which volunteer HEROES commit to raising $1000. The campaign goal is $65,000, money which will be used to provide food, clean clothing and a safe place to stay after a fire or other disaster, for continuing 24/7 emergency connections between soldiers and their families, and for support of wounded warriors.

"It would be a tragedy to cut back on the disaster services which our community has come to rely upon or to close the doors of our Ft. Benning Station," says Chapter Executive Director Sharon Lyon. "The combination of the economy and heartwarming support for Haiti has taken a heavy toll on donations for the Chapter."

This year's slate of volunteer HEROES includes political candidates, police officers, small business owners and young entrepreneurs. Please help us get the word out to our community to support these HEROES and ensure Red Cross continues to Save the Day when Help and Hope is needed most.
