Russell Co. to Rehire Some Teachers

RUSSELL COUNTY, GA (WXTX) - The Russell County School District is meeting Tuesday to discuss whether or not to renew coaching supplements for the 2010 -2011 school year, athletic transportation, and the re-hiring of recently laid-off teachers.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Russell County High School.

News Leader 9 previously reported, the coaching supplements for the 2009-2010 school year were reduced due to a lack of state funding.

Last year, coaching supplements totaled nearly $170,000. A new plan allots $30,000 less at $140,000.

The board is making up for the difference by cutting back on coaches in certain departments and consolidating. Coaching supplements within the Russell County school system are renewed on a year-to-year basis.

Tuesday night, the board will also consider whether or not athletic transportation will be the responsibility of the school district or the schools.

Recently, Russell County laid off of all non-tenured teachers and personnel with three years or less experience.

Last year, there were 216 teachers. The district paid for the extra teachers by using reserve funds.

Now the district has to meet the minimum state requirement of 192 teachers. Officials tell News Leader 9 non-tenured teachers are expected to be hired back for the 2010-2011 school year to fill in gaps.

We're told the superintendent will meet with each school to discuss each schools need.
