Columbus landmark re-opens

By Laura Ann Sills - email

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -Four months ago, a family business and Columbus landmark went up in flames. Ruth Ann's Family Restaurant caught on fire December 30, 2009.  As of Friday, April 30th, the cooks are back in the kitchen and the wait staff is preparing the tables.

The Grand Opening is set for Saturday, May 1st.  John Heisey, better known as "Mr. Ruth Ann" said, "I tell everybody, when you come in the door, it is a grand opening for you."

The Heisey's daughter, Lisa Kean, is now the General Manager and she had this to say about the fire, "It could have been far worse. So, for us, it was a chance to remodel and update. It is kind of a weird blessing in disguise."

The remodeling has not taken away Ruth Ann's charm; actually, some think it might have enhanced it.

"It is really more of a down home southern comfortable feeling. You feel like you are at home, everybody welcomes you in," said waitress Charity Kendrick.

When the doors open Saturday all the old favorites, like the chicken and dressing, will be on the menu.

Plus they have some new dishes to boast about.  "We are doing potato corn cakes which is a recipe my mom has been making for us kids all our lives.   We are doing a PB&J pancakes, we are saying they are for the kids, but we know the adults will eat them," explained Kean.

John Heisey is very proud of his family and said, "When someone comes from Washington State they say, ‘meet me at Ruth Ann's,' that's powerful."
