Stephen Hyles to replace retiring Middle District judge

COLUMBUS, GA - The Judges of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia take pleasure in announcing that Judge Stephen Hyles has been appointed for an eight year term as United States Magistrate Judge for the Middle District of Georgia, effective July 1, 2010.

Judge Hyles will be stationed in the Columbus Division and will be succeeding Magistrate Judge Mallon Faircloth who is retiring.

In making the announcement, United States District Judge Clay Land noted that Judge Hyles's judicial experience, intellect, temperament, and reputation as an outstanding lawyer make him uniquely qualified for the position of United States Magistrate Judge.

Judge Land also expressed his appreciation to the Columbus Magistrate Merit Selection panel for their assistance in recommending to the Court five finalists for the position.

The Merit Selection Panel was composed of attorneys Bill Tucker, Randy Aderhold, Kate Cook, Frank Martin, Bill Mason, and Melanie Slaton; and community representatives Billy Blanchard and Dr. Gary Dawson.
