COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - After months of renovations, Columbus Technical College unveiled their new state-of-the-art cosmetology building. The program has been around for decades, but now students have the chance to learn more than ever before.
It's not often a college program can say they have a 100 percent job placement or continued education rate, but Columbus Tech's cosmetology department can. They also have a brand new facility to help keep that tradition going.
Cosmetology Program Manager at Columbus Technical College, Sharon head, told News Leader Nine, "Our goal is to help the students not just pass the board but to show them there's more to this profession than standing behind a chair cutting or styling hair."
The new equipment includes a facial therapy room, hair removal equipment and some perks to make the job easier.
"We have electric shampoo chairs for our clients who have problems putting their heads in the shampoo bowls, now we can raise them up to where they are comfortable and not having to stretch their neck," explained Head.
Turkisha Clark will graduate from the cosmetology program in two weeks. She is glad to work with the new equipment before she leaves, "We have the chairs that are moveable and its more ergonomic for us to work at these stations rather than the old station we had because we're able to move around and get our utensils like we're supposed to."
20 students are accepted into the program each quarter, learning everything from manicures and facials to coloring and salon management. Head said, "They can actually go to work with plastic surgeons, doctor's offices, dermatologists, they can open their own skin spa."
Clark added, "They will have a more advanced experience than they would anywhere else."
Although the building has been in use for a little over a month now, Monday was the official open house to show off the facilities to the public. They serve more than a thousand clients each year and are open Monday through Thursday.
