New details: Phenix City teacher turns self in amid sexual allegations

Phenix City, AL (WTVM) - Thirty-three-year-old Karland Miller is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student on the grounds of Central High School's Freshman Academy.  He teaches 9th grade math and is the assistant varsity basketball coach at Central High.

Police are being tight-lipped about the case. The victim's mother, though, has come forward. She does not want to be identified but tells News Leader Nine that Miller has been having some kind of a relationship with her daughter since September.  She also tells us DNA evidence was collected Wednesday from her daughter and is being tested.

As far as Miller's future at Central High's Freshman Academy, Superintendent Dr. Larry DiChiara says, "Let's say this thing goes to August, and he still has not had trial or anything, he will not come back to work till his case is settled. Either way, we are making contingency plans to put someone else in that classroom or on the supposition that the person may lose their job."

For now, even though school is out for the summer, Miller is not allowed on school grounds.

Dr. DiChiara says he will not be talking to Miller, and the school system has been asked to stay out of it, "because DHR and others have made it very clear to us to stay out of the investigation in any way.  They think if we question them, or the student, or the parent, that somehow we are interfering with the investigation."

The school system is the largest employer in the city, Dr. DiChiara said, "when you have 11,000 employees, occasionally you are going to have someone do something that does a foolish thing.  And, we do our best to protect kids from that."

Miller turned himself in Tuesday afternoon after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. He has since posted bond.

Earlier this month, a Phenix City teacher turned himself in for allegations of sexual battery--a misdemenor. Click here to read that story. That teacher has since returned to work.

News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
