COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Memorial Day has many thinking of beaches, American flags and friends.

Ahkelia Copeland, the owner of A and A travel, says vacationers have skyrocketed this weekend. "It's the first weekend after school is out. They are vacationing this weekend and go ahead and get their family vacations out of the way."

Before travelers hit the road, many have had their cars checked.

Epperly Tires has had their doors packed since Monday with preparing travelers.

Toole says this weekend travelers can be safe by checking your car before you leave and be aware that roads will be crowded. "The main thing is patience. A lot of us have short fuses when we get in traffic but the main thing is just to be prepared, do all of your maintenance services and be ready to go and always have the car checked ahead of time."

It seems everyone is going south to enjoy the beaches, some even going on Memorial Day cruises.

Copeland says, "A lot of people are doing Florida. It's the best time to go to the beaches a lot of cruises are starting this weekend so a lot of people are doing the beach area."
