COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – News Leader 9 has learned the mayor has announced the crime lab located in Columbus will close in two months.

Mayor Jim Wetherington received word of the lab's closing from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Columbus and other cities funded $66,000 to keep it open.

Wetherington says the final decision to close the lab was made by the governor.

We are told area law enforcement will have to transport evidence to labs in Macon, GA or Atlanta for testing.
