Body found in Chattahoochee River

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower confirmed to WTVM the body of William Cook, 44, was recovered from the Chattahoochee River in Columbus just before 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses say Cook and a few friends were swimming in the river Friday evening, when he was caught in a current and could not swim back to the river bank.

Columbus Police confirmed to WTVM Friday night that divers began searching for Cook in the river near the Bibb City Mill around 7:00 p.m.

They could not locate him, and were forced to call off the search at nightfall.

This morning, divers resumed the search and discovered Cook's body around 8:45 a.m.

Thrower pronounced Cook dead at 9:43 a.m.

His body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
