Press Release

OPELIKA, AL - The City of Opelika officials were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Dr. William Lazenby following an accident at his home on Monday evening, June 14th.

Opelika Police Officers responded to the residence of Dr. William Lazenby upon receiving a call from Mrs. Peggy Lazenby after she became concerned that he had not returned to the house as it grew dark.

He had been mowing the family's acreage. Dr. Lazenby was located at approximately 9:30 p.m. It appeared that his lawn mower had turned over on top of him.

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Dr. William Lazenby," stated Mayor Gary Fuller, "not only was he an excellent member of the Opelika City Council since being elected to that office in October of 2000, he was an outstanding citizen, husband, father, and grandfather.

He leaves a legacy of outstanding contributions to our medical community, support for Opelika City Schools, and the growth and success of East Alabama Medical Center. He will be greatly missed."

Opelika City Council President, Eddie Smith added, "On behalf of the Opelika City Council, my colleagues and I extend our sincere condolences to Peggy and the entire Lazenby family. We are devastated by the loss of Dr. Lazenby and the City of Opelika will never be the same after losing this fine ambassador, gentlemen, and friend."
