OPELIKA, AL - Long-time Opelika physician and Opelika city councilman, Dr. William D. Lazenby, died last night in a home accident. He was 79 years old.
Lazenby was cutting his grass just before dark when he apparently attempted to go up an incline when the riding mower he was operating flipped over backwards, pinning him underneath.
His wife became concerned when she could not locate him after he did not return to the house around 9:00 PM.
Opelika police were called to the residence to a missing person call and upon arrival conducted a search of the property and located Lazenby after about thirty minutes next to the residence at the bottom of the small incline underneath the mower.
Opelika Rescue and EAMC EMS were immediately summoned to the residence and removed the mower from atop Lazenby.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Lazenby dead at the scene at 9:45 PM.
He died immediately from probable traumatic asphyxia and multiple blunt force injuries when the heavy duty riding mower landed on top of him. No postmortem examination or foul play is suspected and the incident is being investigated as an accident al death.
Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner's office are investigating.
