AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Being among the best high schools in the nation is familiar territory for the Auburn High Tigers but principal Dr. Cathy Long is thrilled with another honor - bring ranked the number two high school in the state of Alabama.

Long says, "That recognition is incredible because it goes to my teachers, it goes to these kids, and it goes to this community. I was absolutely thrilled. It takes a while to process it but you just have to sit back and go wow all these things we're doing, we're doing something right for these kids."

The Newsweek article ranks schools based on demographics and the types of courses a school offers.

Auburn High school offers 16 AP classes and an IB program, each a college level curriculum.

The high school gives out at least a thousand AP tests each school year and many of their students go to college. Dr. Long says, "you want to always be pushing them, planting seeds that you know you are taking the toughest courses you can because when you go to the next level...there's a tremendous payoff to taking AP courses."

Tremendous for students - if they pass the exam of these college courses the class is credited towards a college curriculum saving the student time and the parents money.
