FATAL ACCIDENT KILLS COLUMBUS WOMAN ON ALABAMA ROADWAY

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala.  (WTVM) – Alabama State Troopers are investigating a one car accident that killed the driver, a 72 year old Columbus woman. State Troopers say the accident happened Wednesday afternoon on Highway 431 in Chambers County. 

Troopers say Janice Eckert was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer, when she left the roadway and hit a tree. She was killed instantly. Troopers say they are still trying to figure out why Eckert left the roadway and the accident remains under investigation.

BELOVED OPELIKA LEADER LAID TO REST

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) - Thousands of East Alabama residents are expected to turn out to pay their last respects to Dr. William Lazenby. The longtime East Alabama surgeon, Opelika city council member and philanthropist died in a lawnmower accident at his home over the weekend. He was 79-years old.

Services for Dr. Lazenby will e held at 5 p.m. central time Thursday, at First Baptist Church in Opelika. The church will have visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

The Lazenby family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the East Alabama Medical Center's foundation towards a nursing scholarship in Lazenby's honor.
