LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -  A LaGrange man is sentenced to life in prison for killing a man police say lived one street over from him.

A jury found 25-year-old Willie "Bubba" Gates guilty of the murder of 26-year-old Raymond "Little Boot" Parker. The fatal shooting happened last July.

Melissa Himes, Assistant District Attorney on the case, says Gates was angry because he thought the victim may have struck his female cousin.

Himes says the gripe was all part of a larger day-long fight between relatives and good friends and the brawl escalated when Gates confronted Parker in a yard near the corner of Dix Street and Burr Street on the city's east side.

According to the state, Gates walked up to Parker and asked him if he hit his cousin and he denied it when suddenly, Gates pulled up a rifle and shot Parker in the center of his head, killing him.

The victim, Himes says, was unarmed.

The verdict came down in Troup County Wednesday afternoon.

Gates was convicted of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Prosecutors tell News Leader 9 he was previously convicted for cocaine possession.

Willie Gates received a life sentence plus an additional five years which he will serve in the state prison system.
