COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A wreath hangs outside the front door of 18-year old Gerald Hatchett's home on 25th street in East Highland located near Lakebottom Park in Columbus. Hatchett was shot and killed down the street from his home Monday night.

"I can't believe someone did that to him," said his father, Jeffery Hatchett, who heard 3 gunshots just before going to bed around 10:30 p.m.  "I saw him laying in the street with blood running out of his head."

According to police, the bullet hit Hatchett in the head. The coroner pronounced him dead on the street in front of Wayne Parmer's home, a neighbor. "Adults should come together to teach our youth on how we came up, not the traditional way, but according to life."

Hatchett is the fifth victim to get shot in East Highland within a month. The other four survived. His family describes him as a quiet person who stayed out of trouble. They also said several boys beat him up three weeks ago at a nearby gas station. He leaves behind a one year old daughter.
