COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) –  News Leader 9 has learned the GBI crime lab, located in Muscogee County, will remain open.

On June 8th, the mayor received word from state to close the lab.

Thursday's announcement comes as good news to the city of Columbus and to area law enforcement, "I received word from the Lieutenant Governor's Office at 12:30 p.m. that the Crime Lab is going to stay open. This is good news for us and the surrounding counties that this office serves," said Columbus mayor, Jim Wetherington.

Prior to the governor's decision to close the crime lab, Columbus and other cities funded $66,000 to keep it open.

News Leader 9 is following Thursday's announcement. We'll have the latest information on this story as soon as it becomes available.
