Dawson named new police chief of Auburn

Press Release

AUBURN, AL - City Manager Charles M. Duggan, Jr. is pleased to announce the appointment of Tommy Dawson as Chief of Police. Dawson has served as Acting Chief of Police since May 1, 2010.

"Chief Dawson's 23 years of service has equipped him to serve with distinction as Chief of Police for the City of Auburn. I am confident that he will protect and serve Auburn citizens with an unwavering sense of duty and commitment," Charles M. Duggan Jr. said.

Dawson joined the APD as a patrol officer in 1987. He served as a narcotics division sergeant, patrol lieutenant and detective lieutenant before being promoted to assistant chief in January 2008. Dawson graduated from Montgomery's Faulkner University with a degree in Criminology, and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 2006.

"Chief Dawson has done an excellent job while he was the Assistant Police Chief as well as in his time as the Acting Police Chief," said Bill James, Director of Public Safety.  "He has a great rapport with the community, the police staff and other departments in the City. I don't expect this to change in his capacity as Police Chief. I look forward to working closely with him as we prepare for the future," James added.

Dawson's appointment is effective July 7, 2010. He says he is humbled and honored to be allowed to serve the citizens of Auburn as Chief of Police.
