Russell County construction projects

RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WXTX) -  In Wednesday morning's Russell County Commission meeting, officials gave a progress report for one on-going construction project and began talks of another one starting up in the county.

More than a year ago Russell County Commissioners put the wheels in motion for renovations on the Judicial Building. Now they have made final approval on the project, putting the county one step closer to completion.

"It means now we can put the project out to bid and get contractors to give their prices and then we select the lowest responsive bidder and get a contract prepared, get the commissioners approval and then start construction in November," Scott Holmes with Hecht-Burdeshaw Architects told Fox 54.

The biggest concern during the construction process is for the safety of employees and residents. Holmes said, "The safety will be a lot better. The prisoners will be separate, the judges will be safer, the jury will be separated from the public. It's going to work better as a building the way it should have all along."

While one construction project sees the light at the end of the tunnel, another one is hoping to get started. County planners want an additional ball field at the Russell County Sports Complex.

Planning and Economic Development Specialist Barbara Scott said, "We write the grant and submit it and hope we're one of the ones to get the money. It's highly competitive."

They want to provide more opportunities for youth in the area and are hoping the state will grant them the money. Scott added, "The maximum grant award is $250,000. We are still working on the cost estimate from the engineers, we don't know precisely what the cost will be, but we're expecting it would be about that $250,000."

The planning committee for the Russell County Sports Complex is holding a public meeting at the Russell County Courthouse July 26th at 4 p.m. They are hoping the public will come and give input on the project and ask questions.
