Former Bama linebacker Lowe inducted into College FB Hall of Fame

SOUTH BEND, IN. - Woodrow Lowe, a star Alabama linebacker during the 1970s will be among 23 players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame during ceremonies Friday and Saturday the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

Known as one of the hardest hitting linebackers in the history of Alabama's prestigious  program, Lowe led the Crimson Tide to the 1973 national title as a three-time First Team All-America selection. Playing under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, Lowe was a valuable part of the Crimson Tide defense.

During his sophomore year, Lowe led his team to an undefeated season and a third straight SEC title.

Alabama athletic director Mal Moore, who was then an assistant coach for the Crimson Tide stated, "He was consistently excellent throughout his playing career and his induction into the Hall of Fame is very appropriate. He put together a career that set a standard that carries on to this day."

Serving as team captain his senior season, Lowe guided Alabama to their fourth straight SEC title and a victory in the Sugar Bowl over Penn State.

Lowe entered the 1976 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round by the San Diego Chargers, where he remained throughout his 11-year career.

Following his career with the Chargers, Lowe began a successful coaching career. He served as an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders and the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Lowe passed around credit for his induction.

"There are a lot of other people that I owe credit to and give credit to," he said. "It is truly an honor to be inducted, but there are a lot of people that had a lot to do with me being successful." Lowe is currently an assistant coach at Jackson-Olin High School (Alabama).
