Phenix City Hornets advance to compete Field of 32

ORLANDO, FL - The Southeastern Hornets of Phenix City, AL, an organization which consist of 13 year old and 14 year old basketball players respectively, advances to compete in the field of 32 today at the AAU National Tournament in Orlando, FL.

The AAU event brings together the most competitive and elite teams from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to compete to be crowned AAU National Champions. There were a total of 116 teams in this year's AAU Nationals.

The teams were broken down into pools with four teams in each respective pool. There are only 32 teams now remaining in AAU competition, with the Hornets landing in first place in their pool.

The Hornets clinched first place in their respective pool by defeating Massachusetts Patriots by a score of 57-42. Five Hornet players scored in double figures with Shooting Guard Devonta Lindsey leading all scorers with 18pts.

The Hornets' Mark Rogers added 14pts, while Power Forward Devin Pugh contributed 11pts in the winning cause. Point Guard Jahlil Keys finished with a double double by scoring 10pts with 10 assist.

The win comes after a disappointing lost on Friday to hometown heroes, the Orlando Spartans. When asked about his team's performance in this crucial contest, the Hornets' Head Coach Carlton Jones stated, "Our defense was very good. Our team forced numerous turnovers and was able to score a lot of points off of steals and fast break opportunities." Coach Jones goes on to say, "Our team was hungry after losing a heart breaker against the Orlando Spartans. My guys played this contest with intensity and never trailed the entire game."

Bracket play in the field of 32 begins today and concludes on Wednesday, July 21, ending with the Championship game. Next up for the Hornets are the Panthers Select from Dallas, TX. A win tonight would advance the Hornets to a Sweet 16 appearance. Tip off is at 7pm inside The ESPN Wide World of Sports Arena in Orlando, FL.
