OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Goodwill, Best Buy and the gas station Eagle 280 were all presented counterfeit money this weekend. A customer attempted to use a counterfeit check for more than $500 at Best Buy on Friday.
Fortunately, the cashier caught the check and notified Opelika police.
However the other two businesses were not as fortunate.
They did not catch the counterfeit money until the transaction had occurred and the suspects were long gone.
Captain Elkins with Opelika P.D. says if you take a second to double check money, it will save your business from counterfeit, "money feels like money, it's simple to hold up to a light and look for a bar that's embedded in the money, you look for fibers that's in the money and come merchants even have pens that changes colors on counterfeit money" he says.
Many businesses have the cashier responsible for not catching the counterfeit money, foot the bill in the end.
Opelika police have arrested the suspect from best buy, the suspects from Eagle 280 and Goodwill in Opelika have not been caught.
Captain Elkins says it's a felony that equals 2 to 20 years in prison.
