What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins form as a result of Venous Insufficiency. Healthy leg veins normally route blood in a one way direction, from the leg to the heart. Valves within these veins in some people may become damaged and slow the progression of blood out of the leg causing venous reflux or backward flow. The pressure in the vein increases and causes the veins on the surface of the legs to bulge causing varicose veins.

Think about veins like a tree trunk and what you see on the legs are the branches. The tree trunk is the main problem where the blood is flowing backwards. Anyone at any age can develop varicose veins and spider veins.

Many times it is hereditary, but sometimes it can be caused by periods of long standing or constant crossing of the legs while sitting. Spider veins are smaller thread like veins that in some cases may or may not be related to venous insufficiency causing mostly a cosmetic concern.
