Woman's SUV crashes into side of vet hospital

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) –   Flip flops may be a summer staple, but one Chambers County woman says her flip flops caused her to slam her SUV into the side of an animal hospital – injuring two people.

Veterinarian tech Kim Brown told News Leader 9 she thought a bomb had gone off inside Riverside Veterinary Hospital, "I was standing in the hallway and heard a loud noise, then I heard screaming."

The full-sized SUV slammed into one of the examination room. A doctor, patient and her dog were inside.

"You couldn't see. There was smoke and water everywhere but I was able to get the doctor, dog and client out. Everyone was okay, "said Commander Stephen Doyal of the Lanett Police Department, " The driver she stated her flip flop had gotten caught in the pedals. She accelerated rather than brake causing her to crash into the building."

The female driver also told police she was on prescription medications, and consented to a blood test.

Charges have not been filed, but police are waiting on the toxicology report to come back.

As for Kim Brown, she and the elderly female client were treated and released from the hospital, "Now, that I look back on it it's amazing that no one was actually killed or hurt," said Brown.

The driver of the SUV was taking her dog to the vet when she ran into the building. Commander Doyal does not believe she will face any charges.
