COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Teleworking, or working from home, one day a week saves an average of 78 hours of commute time every year, or nine work days.
The Clean Air Campaign has teamed up with Georgia employers to get more employees working from home.
One local teleworker, Cheryl Rodewig, tells News Leader Nine that not only does working from home save her time and money; it also changed her attitude about work. It is more comfortable at home, fewer interruptions. I work better and faster, I think," said Rodewig.
She is a writer for The Bayonet. Two years ago her supervisor suggested she telework on days she is just interviewing and writing. Now, she spends her Mondays and Fridays traffic free.
It is estimated that you can save $780 a year in wear and tear and gas money by teleworking just one day a week. Teleworkers also increase productivity by an average of 15 - 20 percent.
Rodewig explains, "If I were to run home it would be 30 minutes there, 30 minutes back. I would be able to touch the door and that would be it. It is also a vote of confidence from my supervisor, editors."
Several companies around the valley are involved in teleworking. Clean Air campaign representative Wanda Jenkins tells us AFLAC has about 300 teleworkers. "They encourage employees to telework more and it gives people the option to work from home," said Jenkins.
Perhaps the biggest benefit, and the reason the Clean Air Campaign got involved, is to reduce our carbon footprint. Keeping your car parked has a direct impact on the region's air quality.
The Clean Air Campaign says employees can qualify for a home office tax credit, reduce childcare or eldercare costs, and lower vehicle insurance premiums. Employers can receive up to $20,000 in tax credits from the Georgia Telework Tax Credit. To read more about the Clean Air Campaign, click here.
Some professions just do not allow you to work from home. So, some other options for reducing your carbon footprint are to carpool or bring your own cup or mug into work and stop using Styrofoam and plastic.
