Callaway to celebrate 30th anniversary of fitness triathlon

PINE MOUNTAIN VALLEY, GA - Athletes and spectators get ready!  The 30th annual Callaway Gardens Fitness Series Triathlon is Sunday, September 5, 2010.

In its 30th year, this event is the oldest triathlon in the South, the fifth oldest in the nation, and traditionally ranks as one of the top 10 triathlons by the sport's governing body, the U.S. Triathlon Federation.

Races begin at 8 a.m. ET, just after the Sunday morning balloon launches at the 12th annual Callaway Gardens Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival. 

Athletes compete in a 1K swim - 30K bike - 8K run.  Those not up to this extreme challenge, but desiring to compete, can test their stamina in a 5K run at 7:50 a.m. 

Awards for the 5K are presented on site around 9 a.m. and triathlon awards are presented at 11 a.m.  Following the race, enjoy the festivities of the balloon festival and wonderful amenities of Callaway Gardens.

In addition to the triathlon, the Fitness Series at Callaway Gardens offers events throughout the year, including a January marathon; May duathlon; June sprint triathlon and a 10K race and mountain bike competition, both in November.  A 5K is offered before each event.

A special Fitness Series overnight rate is available for $120* per room, double occupancy.  The package includes one night in the Mountain Creek® Inn, admission to Callaway Gardens and use of the Callaway Fitness Center.
